Redesign Logistic System Schiphol-Oost

The hangars and depots of all the airport’s maintenance organisations are situated in the technical area of Schiphol-East. However, the majority of airline activities take place at Schiphol-Centre. As a result, a great deal of transporting of parts as well as the aircraft themselves takes place between these locations. The current logistics system for the transport of parts leaves a great deal to be desired, as a result of which a lot of time and money is wasted.

Approach

The current logistics system will be analysed in order to determine where the problems lie and how they problems might be solved. Existing and innovative transport techniques, as well as relevant future developments, will also be investigated. Based upon these analyses, a concept of (seamless) logistics system will be developed in order to facilitate the transport of aircraft parts between Schiphol-East and Schiphol-Centre.

Results

This study was finished in last quarter of 2007, resulting in a new concept for a logistic system for aircraft parts of KLM E&M. These recommendations were received with great enthusiasm by the parties involved, therefore the student will be employed by KLM E&M in order to implement this concept. The realization of the new logistic system is planned for 2008.

May 2008, the first recommendation coming from the thesis study was realized when the new Logistics Centre for KLM E&M was opened at the Anthony Fokker Park. In the following months also the associated new transport concept was implemented and new security gate at “Hek 11” needed for this concept was realized.

With these steps the majority of recommendations from this thesis study are realized in the fall of 2008 and the new logistic concept for KLM E&M is now working properly.
