Logistical concept terminal

In 2009, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol handled 43.5 million passengers and 1,279,000 tonnes of cargo. In order to maintain its position as one of the largest airports in Europe and in the world, the facilities at Schiphol are optimized for both departing passengers as well as transfer passengers. To achieve this goal, Schiphol developed and applied the AirportCity concept, which offers passengers all services of a modern city.

In the Terminal the AirportCity concept includes shops, bars, restaurants, offices, hotels, a casino, a spiritual centre, a wellness centre, a Babycare Lounge and other services. This way Schiphol increases its appeal on passengers in its strive to become Europe’s preferred airport. In 2008, 47% of Schiphol’s profits came from commercial activities, like shops and restaurants in the Terminal.

In order to function, these facilities need to be supplied. Recent developments in security and environmental aspects are likely to decrease Schiphol’s capability of processing goods in the Terminal. This will result in a decreased level of service to the passengers, which contradicts with the philosophy behind the AirportCity concept. Schiphol is eager to prevent this from happening, and is therefore interested in new integral solutions for the processing of goods in the Terminal.

Future plans for the extension of the current Terminal facilities are another incentive for this integral approach. A more efficient way of processing goods can be incorporated in the design of these new buildings.

Approach

The current processing of goods will be analysed, in which the various actors and their interests are identified, as well as the handled volumes. Once this analysis is completed, innovative and more efficient ways of processing goods into the Terminal will be researched.

Results

This research resulted in a new integral concept for the Terminal logistics, which meets future regulations at lower operational costs than the current logistics system. The results of this study will be used in the decision making of future development plans.
