Handling of cruise passengers between PTA and Schiphol
The market for cruises in Europe has been steadily growing the last years and it is expected that this growth will continue. Since the development of Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA), the city of Amsterdam is more able to market itself as a cruise destination. In 2009 this resulted in around 200.000 cruise passengers visiting Amsterdam. For about 100.000 of these passengers Amsterdam served as either the starting – or end point of their cruise. Most of them use Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AAS) as their transferring airport. Therefore, large flows of passengers and baggage run from PTA to AAS.
To improve Amsterdam’s attractiveness as a cruise destination, the ambition of PTA and AAS is to develop a more efficient and comfortable transfer from cruise ship to airplane.
This project will focus on the development of an innovative logistical concept for the handling of passengers and their baggage from PTA to AAS.
Approach
A methodical design approach will be followed to generate new concepts. Firstly, the analysis phase will generate insights in the current situation regarding the handling of cruise passengers and their baggage using analysis of stakeholders, utilized resources and current processes. For the analysis of these processes the average total process time and the average total waiting time are important performance indicators. Secondly, competing cruise terminals and airports will be benchmarked and previous researches will be consulted.
From the analysis phase a functional model will be defined acting as the starting point from which a new concept will be generated.
The new concept will be assessed upon different criteria. These criteria include safety legislation, restrictions from stakeholders, possibilities for implementation and some performance indicators. Finally, the new concept will be evaluated with concerned stakeholders.
Results
This research has generated a new logistical concept for the handling of passengers and their baggage from PTA to AAS. At this moment the feasibility of the concept is being investigated with the involved stakeholders, if possible a pilot will be introduced.
