Future transport services for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has grown last years, both in passengers, employees, visitors and freight. The traffic on the Dutch roads has increased as well. Roads become more congested, which contribute to an increase in travel time and a decrease of reliability and thus a decrease of the landside accessibility of mainport Schiphol. Moreover the increase of road traffic has consequences for the environment.

In this SIM research attractive new transport service concepts have been identified in order to reduce car kilometres and to contribute to the improvement of the landside accessibility and the environment. The research focuses on the passengers who begin or end their journey at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Approach

Possible transport service concepts are set up after an analysis of the transport pattern of passengers, the current situation of the transport possibilities to and from Schiphol and the mandatory and preference requirements of the stakeholders. By means of an expert meeting feedback on these concepts is obtained. The feedback is used to work out one possible transport service concept. Then a best suited modality and technique will be identified. Finally the implementation issues which will rise will be investigated.

Results

A transport service concept which reduces car kilometers to contribute to the improvement of the landside accessibility and the environment is the following:
A collection part in the origin area with several access points in the outskirts of a city bundles the passengers. The same modality is used for the next fast speed line haul part between the origin area and the airport.
The transport service concept has most overlap with the modality and technique of the Superbus as proposed by Wubbo Ockels of Delft University of Technology. A Superbus is a comfortable bus which can travel 250 km/h on Superbus infrastructure, while maintaining normal speeds on the existing public roads.
However, the (infrastructure) costs are high and collaboration with stakeholders outside the airport is necessary to make a step change regarding future transport services.
