The Green Terminal
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol expects that in the near future, KLM will open a scheduled flight that will (partly) fly on bio fuel. Anticipating to KLM’s plan, Schiphol sees an opportunity to make the airport handling process more sustainable. The ‘airport handling process’ stands for the overall process that includes all operations that take place inside the terminal, involving passengers and/or their baggage. To be able to offer this airport handling process in a sustainable way, Schiphol possibly wants this airport handling process to take place in a separate, innovative and sustainable terminal. A corresponding question is to find out how passengers can be made aware of these sustainable improvements in a pleasant way.
Approach
First, each step in the airport handling process will be reviewed and it will be investigated how we can improve sustainability at each step. The main focus areas are: energy, transport, water, health & wellbeing, material use and waste disposal.
Second, whether or not passengers can be made aware about the sustainable improvements of the airport handling process will be investigated. It is important to find out when passengers are receptive for this kind of information. For example, the check-in process can be stressful, so people will not be receptive to ‘sustainability information’ at that moment. The lounge, where people can eat, drink and relax, will possibly be a more suitable location for providing this kind of information.
Finally, research has to be done about how passengers can be made aware of the sustainable projects. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has the unique possibility to use her terminal as a means of communication. During this project, possibilities for this matter will be examined.
Expected result
The goal of this graduation project is to come up with a design for a sustainable airport handling process for the new terminal, aimed at the year 2025. Next to this, the design will contain applications that will make passengers aware of the sustainable character of the airport handling process. The main focus points of this study are expected to be: health & wellbeing, efficient energy use and the sustainable use of materials.
